Lyrics

June 29th, 2009

I’m starting to think that maybe it’s better to just post the lyrics to the two new ones you guys are hearing live, before a hundred wrong versions go up. With me mumbling and the sound coming from a camera phone I can’t blame anyone for getting them wrong though :)

THE WEIGHT

There’s many who’ll tell you they’ll give you their love,
But when they say “give” they mean “take.”
They’ll hang ‘round just like vultures till push comes to shove.
They’ll take flight when the earth starts to shake.

Someone may say that they’ll always be true,
Then slip out the door ‘fore the dawn.
But I won’t leave you hanging on.
Another may stay till they find someone new,
Then before you know they’ll be gone.
But I won’t leave you hanging on;
No, I won’t be that someone.

And come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment.
And come what may, I will be standing right here by your side;
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse and there’s no end in sight.

Some talk of destiny, others of fate,
But soon they’ll be saying goodbye.
But I won’t leave you high and dry.
Because a ring don’t mean nothing
If you can’t haul the weight,
And some of them won’t even try,
But I won’t leave you high and dry;
I won’t leave you wondering why.

And storms will surely come,
But true love is a choice you must make
And you’re the one that I have set my heart to choose.
As long as I live, I swear I’ll see this through.

ALL THE WORLD IS MAD

We are saints made of plaster, our laughter is canned;
We are demons that hide in the mirror.
But the blood on our hands paints a picture exceedingly clear.

We are brimming with cumbersome, murderous greed,
And malevolence deep and profound.
We do unspeakable deeds, does our wickedness know any bounds?

Something’s gone terribly wrong with everyone;
All the world is mad.
Darkness brings terrible things; the sun is gone—
What vanity! our sad, wretched fires.

We can’t medicate man to perfection again;
We can’t legislate peace in our hearts.
We can’t educate sin from our souls, it’s been there from the start.

But the blind lead the blind into bottomless pits,
Still we smile and deny that we’re cursed.
But of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst.

Oh, what little light we have!
It only serves to show
The snares and seeds of wrath
We have already sewn on every path.

Ok, there you go friends. Enjoy.

  2. Francesco Cerruti says:

hi there! thanks for the lyrics! their awesome! =D
i would like to know how do you create your songs, are all spontaneous feelings that come on the skin surface or emotions that are truly well thought about, or even both?

    best hugs!

  3. Danny says:

    A love song : )

I cant help equating this storm you speak of to our economic crisis. My parents used to be on really bad terms, relationship-wise, when i was a kid and it used to really upset me. Now, theyre going through this crazy bankruptcy and I have not seen them fight in years and seem like they don’t mind going bankrupt as long as they’re together. I see it as them weathering the “storm”. I have always had this same idea in my head about love, though not as eloquently put. Digging the lyrics Dustin! I am, however, sorry to say that my parents taught me this lesson years ago…

Have had a gf for 3.5 years and I am happy to say that I’d expose the bones on my back for her and am 100% she’d do the same for me

    : )

  4. Brian says:

i think after reading the official lyrics to “all the world is mad” you realize how insanely deep that song is and how dustin has mastered both the english language and lyricism

  5. Francesco Cerruti says:

i have to totally agree with brian, i’m not english or american, so so some words still i don’t understand.
however that’s perfectly clear not only good english and lyricism but good knowledge and culture also is shown.

  6. Dan says:

Man, I’m wondered with these lyrics writing! It’s like Dustin keeps his mind in work forever.
Such a poet. You guys just NEED to put some sample of song online! I beg you, beggars! hahah
    Hugs, NICE job!

  7. Ricky says:

hey i know this is random compared to what you guys are talking about, but i just want to know, if Thrice doesn’t mind answering, why they haven’t officially released “Lullaby”? that’s one of my favorites, and i really want it on my ipod. ha well good luck on warped tour and i can’t wait for “Beggars” :)

  8. Dave says:

  9. Jacob says:

I can’t believe how off some of us were with the lyrics. lol

  10. Corey says:

Amazing Dustin! You guys never cease to amaze me. I was very proud to have received a signature Dustin Kensrue high-five at warped. God has used your guys music to truly touch my life. Keep this great writing up you guys. Absolutely love the two new ones. Never thought anything could top alchemy index but we’ll definately see!

    God Bless!

Ricky – I remember them playing that live a few years ago, saying it was one of the B-sides for Vheissu that they didn’t include “for some reason”, as if they had second thoughts about not releasing it. Who knows; though I’d love to hear it as a remastered single like Brand New’s “Fork and Knife”.

Also, I’d like to continue the drooling over these lyrics… great stuff Dustin, can’t wait to hear the album

damn these lyrics are great. you’ve done it again dustin!

  14. Ken says:

    …AMAZING!

  15. Ryan says:

    Hey Ricky-

There is a version that you can purchase of “lullaby” that is pretty good, although it’s kind of a hefty price for one song.

    http://www.amazon.com/Hopelessly-Devoted-You-Vol-6/dp/samples/B000FFJ8A8/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1

that album is like $6 and has the b-side (album version) of “lullaby” on it. It’s really good. I’m like you, I really like this song!

Hope this is helpful. Sorry if it isn’t.

  16. Samantha says:

So I saw this earlier this morning, but had to leave to work before I could really grasp the lyrics. Amazing stuff Dustin! Really interested to see what else is in store seeing as my favorite songs on every album have always been the ones we don’t see till the release. All The World is Mad is truly amazing, while The Weight is stunningly beautiful. I love you!

  17. benji's says:

i like the new songs… dont love em, but i like em

  18. natasha says:

can’t wait to hear them live!!!

  19. Jesse says:

Wow. I can’t wait to hear what it all sounds like. See you guys for sure if your ever in the Minnesota area ever!!

    This made my day.

  20. Nahum says:

Beautiful is all I can say :)
and I think I spy some radiohead xD

  21. Greg says:

no offense to Nahum or anything…

but everyone says and knows that there is radiohead influence in their music..even stealing sum intros..riffs..whatever.

    get over it.

its like that south park episode where butters tries to destroy the town or sumthing…but cant come up with an original plan cause it has already happened in the the simpsons..SIMPSONS DID IT!!!

lol seriously radiohead has been in the game for a while..and have covered alotta ground..its kinda expected to have thrice and such bands to have radiohead to influence their music/lyrics.

i really dont care..and eddie u shouldnt really care either..u guys have made ur mark on this benevolent force we call music..and many people will recogmize ur work as the works of Thrice.

im rambling..but jus wanted to get my point across. keep doing what ur doing..i keep listening for a reason.lol

  22. sam says:

umm, you know Munch’s painting, ‘The Scream’?
well ‘All The World is Mad’ paints that picture in my mind when i hear the song or read it’s lyrics.
it sounds kind of crazy, but i promise that is supposed to be a compliment. =]

  23. Ethan says:

I love the lyrics of The Weight, that’s something truly different from your other stuff.

  24. Nico says:

ive always thought of thrice as a really good live band but all the vids i see of warped tour im just like wow…they sound really good together right now. just me? anyway HAVE to see them in august. woohoo

  25. alex says:

Dustin your lyrics keeping getting better and better as time goes on.
I feel that these set of lyrics from these two amazing songs have truly shown another side of you.
I can’t wait to read/hear more of the tracks from Beggars.
Thrice you guys are simply amazing.

    -Alex

  26. Lukee says:

both sets of lyrics read beautifully.
and both of the songs sounds amazing even tho they are only being recorded on small hand held cameras.
i have high hopes for this album, and after these two songs i really dont think im going to be disappointed.
not that i would anyway, each album has pretty much been equal to or bettered the previous in my opinion.

  27. Soundcrak says:

I love the lyrics of The Weight, it is different from others.

  28. Yoshiken says:

I… wow. I don’t really know what to say. Being a poet myself, I really love reading those lyrics, and those are utterly amazing. I think, as far as lyrics are concerned, All the World is Mad may now be one of my favourite Thrice songs~

  29. Maz says:

Both are really different takes on life. One is filled with hope and positive emotions. The other is quite the opposite, it feels sad, but angry as well. I wonder how the songs do sound, I can’t wait for the record release. Sadly I can’t make it to the States, just to watch you guys play the Warped Tour. Looking forward to welcome you guys over here in Germany once again, some day soon.

  30. Chris says:

I would just like to point out that, while not required, Dustin did us the favor of using remarkable punctuation when he posted the lyrics to the new songs!

  31. Matt says:

Yes, we must all be grateful for and humbled by the miraculous gift of correct punctuation.

  32. Matt says:

Also, to the guy who wanted the audio for All The World Is Mad, I posted a link, but my comment is still awaiting moderation (not turning all draconian on us, are you Thrice?), so if you still want it, post yer email and I’ll send it to you.

  33. Jonathan G says:

Man two post in a week, can’t handle it! :)

Thank you Dustin and members of Thrice, for bringing us this music man, its amazing the subjects you touch on and every day I am thanking the Lord above for all that he has blessed you with. May your live well and praise the Lord as well.

I have asked this girl for a relationship that will lead to marriage, may of been kinda alot to put on ones plate but I wanted to show her how deep my convictions were. We are still trying to work things out but the problem is that alot of bad things are coming down upon her, she may be homeless with her mother come this August, I am giving her space so she can think but I wanted to write a poem of how I am ready for whatever may come, but when I read your lyrics, I couldn’t think of anything better to write than what i saw what you wrote. I told her these are your lyrics but I will probably still try to write a good poem for her as well ;) .

    Thanks again,
    Jonathan

  34. rake says:

Praise the almighty Jesus Christ, our lord and savior! Drinker of wine, slayer of the unborn. May the Lords’ light, of unending divinity, be the illumination and inspiration for future pop songs. I love Thrice. Their songs are very uplifting, and stand as a testament to the sheer gullibility of the average human.

  35. Karen says:

The end of your post gave me chills, Jonathan. It just reminds me how much bands and their music can help us so much on a daily basis without them even fully realizing their impact.

  36. Matt says:

    @ rake

Thin ice man, thin ice :D

  37. Sean E says:

Edd! Did you get to see No Knife’s last ever show in San Diego the other week??

  38. Cody says:

im horny to blast this stuff in my car.

ps dustin. write another solo album. thanks!

  39. Ricky says:

Hey thanks Ryan and Kyle, those both really helped! Yeah I just really like the song and maybe i’ll just buy the whole album or something, i haven’t decided yet ha. But thanks again!

  40. Rob says:

We all have to say thanks God to give the chance to know Thrice.

3 little fans from Hungary :)

  41. matt says:

    rake –
    really, man? was that necessary?

  42. Sean E says:

Why you guys raking rake across hot coals?

  43. Scott says:

All the World is Mad has a lot of big words! you guys are smart

  44. alex says:

i dont know if this has been posted. Its the best quality of the weight i could find.

  45. Andy says:

    Greetings from Glasgow, Scotland!

Met up with a friend last night and we always end up talking about and looking forward to the next thrice album… and have been doing so for years, what you guys do is great and encourages many, so keep going!

Brilliant lyrics, awesome tunes, as always. I was wondering if any of you guys have ever read any George MacDonald? I’m not expecting an answer ;-)

    Keep growing!

  46. Bryson says:

you guys killed it at warped tour today in phoenix!! thanks for being cool and hangin out and talkin to me, and also bearing with the 108 degree heat!!!

    cheers!

  47. Doug says:

Dustin, I just want to say that the lyrics to the “All the World is Mad” are absolutely amazing. The way that you write and encapsulate the idea of the total depravity of man, it is amazing. Truly awesome.

  48. jchan says:

Thanks for the lyrics Dustin. I just listened to The weight for the first time and I must say its very different, but I like it. I’m looking forward to the new album.

  49. Jared says:

    @ Andy from Scotland:

I just finished reading “Diary of an Old Soul” by George MacDonald, beautiful poetry. Seeing as to how much George MacDonald influenced C.S. Lewis (who Dustin seems to be significantly influenced by e.g. “The Earth Will Shake” ect) it would be my guess that Dustin is indeed familiar with MacDonald’s work.

And thanks to Ryan for posting the link for “Lullaby.” I’m thinking it will be a $6 well spent.
