We Survived AZ

July 1st, 2009

Team shorts hit the stage today, and we barely made it. It was admittedly not as bad as it can get; There was a breeze…but really, it’s pretty unreal. How do you Arizonians do it? I prefer to live outside of my oven thanks.

The record is mixed, and Dave Schiffman really did a stellar job. Mastering will be done quite soon, and the whole audio side of the record will be done. As mentioned, our pal Nate is doing the artwork and it’s really looking nice. Can’t wait to get everything in place!

Teppei

Listening:
Wilco – Wilco is downloading right now on iTunes. I have no doubt that it’ll be a great record. Plus, there’s a song called Wilco on there. A part of me will get a kick out of seeing Wilco Wilco Wilco on my iPod :) Oh, and it might have the best record cover I’ve seen in a while.

Oh, man, I love Stand and Feel Your Worth. Gives me chills.

Thanks to those who are posting stuff that gets replies from band members. It makes this site that much more worthwhile.

Thanks to the band for spending time here with us. :]

  2. Trask says:

Stand and Feel Your Worth is pretty incredible. I was kinda sad that it didn’t make the live DVD or the Thrice show I went to last spring. Same with Weight of Glory.
But honestly any Thrice setlist is an ideal setlist for me, I love every song.

  3. Vince says:

    @DK

Yea, I definitely know what you mean about it being only one song, and therefore only one idea in the spectrum of the album. I was pretty sure there’d be a focus on grace at some point, because you guys don’t seem the type to go ubercynical on us ;) . I’d say its more that I’m not used to it. Even with pretty furious songs like Where Idols Once Stood or Under a Killing Moon, there’s still a mention or assumption that not all humans are guilty of the accused flaw (ignorrance in both, and power too). AtWiM really encompasses everyone, so it was unexpected. Maybe thats a good thing though, haha. Thanks for replying!

  4. Vince says:

Oh, and about songs to see live, I’d really love to see Music Box. It really is a gorgeous song.

  5. holly says:

i was at soma when they were touring with planes mistaken for stars.

last time i saw thrice! sad day. :( .
I have seen dustin a few times…best time was with jon foreman and aaron from mwY back in december.

hopefully, enshaallah (God willing), ill see thrice…this tour

  6. Mason says:

How come you guys don’t play Lullaby…? Just curious :)

  7. NK says:

See?? Look how much love there is for all these rarely-played (Vheissu era in particular) Thrice songs.

    Come on Thrice! Please!

I think we’re all willing to sacrifice most of the Artist songs that are played (with the exception of Don’t Tell. That song is too good to sacrifice) in exchange for these. =)

  8. Scott says:

    @Mason
that song is so sweet. I would love to hear it live. Some of my favorite of Dustin’s lyrics.

@whoever got mad about my Identity Crisis/illusion of safety comment
Im not saying that they shouldn’t play those songs anymore because they are old. Im just saying that the newer stuff is leaps and bounds better. Not to mention the fact that it doesn’t even sound like the same band. Anyone here that has seen Bad Religion play live knows the how great they pull off playing songs from all their records new and old. The 3 times I have seen them I have been impressed at their ability to pull songs off the old records and new records and come up with a great set list. But! with only a small amount of variation, Bad Religion is essentially Bad Religion. They haven’t changed much over years. Yes they are a bit more melodic now than they used to be but really they aren’t too much different. The illusion of safety to me represents a style of music that Thrice long ago abandoned. Im not saying its not a good album. I actually think its a phenomenal album. I still listen to it at least on a monthly basis. That being said, if i have the opportunity to hear Deadbolt one more f-ing time or to hear a new song like the arsonist (btw, why don’t you guys ever play that live? its such a good song!) I definitely choose the arsonist. Or if its between hearing 3 songs on IOS and 3 more songs off AI or Beggars, I choose the new songs. They are better, and I have heard them less times (or not all) live. Not to mention i’m pretty sure they are sick of playing all those songs. At the end of the Beatles career do you think they were stoked to play I wanna hold your hand or all my lovin? I don’t know for sure, but i would bet they were sick of those songs, as great as they were. Furthermore Im sick of hearing people say, oh they need to go back to the IOS and AITA style. Once again, great records, but childish when compared with the new stuff. Face it everyone, they aren’t going back to that style, and I’m glad about it. Where would Radiohead be if they still sounded like they did on Pablo Honey? Where would the Beatles be in history if they kept writing songs like 8 days a week? Im sure they would be there still, just not as heralded as they are now. Anyways, its now midnight and I have to get up and take the CPA exam tomorrow. Sorry for the rant. Much love to all us Thrice fans that frequent this sight on an hourly basis. Focker out.

  9. Ryan S says:

I agree with everybody here about some of the “lesser known” Thrice songs. The tour with These Arms Are Snakes was in the Fall of ‘06 and is still the best Thrice show I have ever seen. I saw them at Slim’s in San Francisco. It was an awesome concert. They played “To What End”, “Hoods on Peregrine”, “Red Death”, “In Years to Come”, “Weight of Glory”, “Stand and Feel Your Worth”, “Music Box”, “Flags of Dawn”, among the other “norms”. It was awesome. I think the coolest part of that show versus the next 3 (you I know, I’m a bit spoiled) times I’ve seen them is that it was such a small venue. Felt really cool. While progression is what it’s all about and the new stuff is awesome, it’s that old stuff thrown in here and there that keeps bringing you back every time!

  10. Tyler1 says:

so we have ty , tyler , My self Tyler1 and Tyler2 ???? hahaha

  11. benji's says:

thats exactly what did they did at Soma in San Diego.. You guys need to pay attention… it was awesome! Even played “hoods on peregrine” that song is pretty gnarly live

  12. benji's says:

AND PLUS THE NEW STUFF IS NOT LEAPS AND BOUNDS BETTER…. IDENTITY CRISIS WAS PERFECT, ILLUSION WAS PERFECT AND THE ARTIST WAS PERFECT….How you can ever go beyond perfect is beyond me

  13. Michael says:

I’ve heard the CPA exam is grueling and takes more than one attempt to pass all the parts of it. hope you do well, scott.

  14. Perri. says:

I love every single Thrice album.

I don’t think I could EVER pick a fave. They are just all amazing lyrically and musically I don’t know who said it but about Identity Crisis being rubbish? HA! Thats all I’m saying.

Right now though I’m totally loveing Between The End And Where We Lie.

I would totally LOVE to see Thrice and to see them play old songs. Especially the TIOS version of So Strange I Remember You =D

    xxx

  15. benji's says:

@ scott…. What if you went to see the Eagles and they were like well we’re not gunna play Hotel California because we wrote that song almost 30 years ago and we’re sick and tired of playing it. Or Robert Plant being tired of singing Stair way or Black Dog… Of course its awesome to hear the new stuff, but classic’s never go out of style, you feel me. If i got choose a thrice song to see live it would def be T&C. Illusion is like a fine wine, the longer it sits around it just gets better, of course there is amazing new stuff that comes out, different stuff, but it just makes you appreciate that fine that much more… sorry i posted 3 times in a row, i just cant fall asleep and im pretty excited the lakers are gunna sign Artest… Also Eddie and Riley arent getting any love lately… Dudes are freaking bad ass, Thrice would not be Thrice without them and Riley is constatnly updating, and he’s an Angels fan which is great especially now that we’re in first place, Everyone Knows the West Coast is The Best Coast….
Sorry for the Randomness… Im an Imsomniac tonight

  16. Sean E says:

I think you guys should look into playing Kill Me Quickly again, even though I know it was a regular fixture for you back in the day. I only say that because when I saw Trust on the Live DVD I was really surprised and it turned out really cool.

Or maybe Paper Tigers, the video of you guys performing that song in the UK a few years ago is amazing (the one where Dustin stands on the speaker).

  17. Sean E says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-r-CQIu-CQ&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Ftheboreds.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D2%26page%3D658&feature=player_embedded

Wowee. Check out Teppei’s little riff at 2:05! I never heard that in the other vids. cool.

  18. princexero says:

Guys..Thrice have to play a “perfect mix” of older and newer songs..It’s obvious!!! but, I don’t think newer songs are better than the older, but just only different songs!
I only see thrice two times in Italy, and they played a wonderful show with Eclipse, Paper Tigers, Phoenix Ignition and Identity Crisis (and many more of course) in 2004!! great live set!!

  19. Tom says:

    @ scott (& W/ benji)

I understand how hungry you are to see the newer songs live, and trust me, as an inhabitant of a tiny rainy island, one cherishes a Thrice show as much as you guys off the beaten concert-track in the states, so much so as i might start posting daily to ask when any european dates may be thrown our way? any chance of a rough ballpark guess Dustin? Need to book the time off work in case the UK dates are mid-week as i’ll have to travel to one of our “big” cities you see!

Sorry for the tangent, yeh so back to what scott was saying,I adore Illusion, and tAitA, they’re probably still my favourite records along with Air, I understand Thrice wanting to retire some of their songs, but i disagree fundamentally that they’re “childish” in any way, or bad records. The early thrice stuff (i mean illusion/tAitA, as I think the progression to “Great” happened for the first time at IoS) isn’t any worse than Vheissu or TAI. It’s different. They’re all awesome, thrice are peerless in terms of bands that move me and matter to me, but if I saw a rare UK set with no representatives from those records I would be seriously upset. Because those of us that have journeyed with Thrice for the best part of 10 years (and some of you guys from IC) want to see a throwback to that time. They were the albums that cemented our love, and that’s what they’ve grown for. I would mark it as a sad, sad, sad day if deadbolt was retired. I can see the argument for it, and i certainly don’t stand there and shout for it until it’s played (that doesn’t happen in the UK, i’ve heard it ONCE at the 6 shows i’ve been to, towards the end of the set cos i reckon a guy was worried he wouldn’t hear it as it was approaching 10:30 – manchester academy 2 or 3, fact fans).

I guess what i’m saying is, it must be so hard to cram 100 songs into a festival set, or even a headline hour set, but i long that thrice, as they have to date continue to get it bang right – a healthy slant towards newer material, but the songs that are THE VERY REASON the long in the tooth fans fell in love with the band get an airing.

  20. Tom says:

And a quick point to how awesome it is that we can interact with our favourite band – it’s truly awesome – at the Reading & Leeds Festival warm up show at London’s Electric Ballroom, I had been banging on here about how i was going to set up my tent at the festival and then head back into london to catch the warm up before going to see the band at the festival two days later, and DK asked if anyone was going to see them at reading a couple of days later. This may have been generic stage banter, but my heart dares to hope it was my constant wittering (this is pre-twitter) on here being noticed and noted. Made my weekend anyway all the same…

  21. Sean E says:

Pish posh. I’m in the UK too and I’ve seen Thrice a grand total of 0 times. Sometimes, I hate being in Wales…

  22. Matt says:

    @ Sean E

    high-five, fellow Welshman

  23. Tom says:

@ Sean E – I live in Norwich, so it’s a case of travelling whenever they’re here, when I was at uni in Leeds it was okay cos they came to manchester but otherwise it’s been london or reading festival… I’m guessing they’ve never played cardiff? what would be the closest after that? Bristol have they not played there?

  24. Tyler H says:

    @ NK

I recall Dustin saying that Don’t Tell and We Won’t Ask was not overly popular with the fans. Don’t really know why, though..its a great song.

and I guess Tyler is a popular name ;)

  25. Octahedron says:

Spain is waiting your live! Muse & you in November? …pleasE?

  26. Vince says:

A question for Dustin, if you have time?

I’ve noticed a change in your lyrics with the Alchemy Index. It was gradual, but nothing major, and now I really see it with this new album. You seem to be more blunt with your message now than you used to be. I don’t know if others have noticed it, but for example, songs like “Red Sky,” “The Artist in the Ambulance,” and “Of Dust and Nations,” were written in a way that it let the listener interperet what you meant. There were of course the occasional songs like “For Miles” or even “Stand and Feel Your Worth” (to a degree) that spoke to the listener in a more blunt manner, but overall your lyrics tended to be cryptic and allowed for different interperetations (or at least some pretty mighty discussions about what they meant, haha). Then with Alchemy Index, there was a slight shift in tone with songs like “Broken Lungs” and “The Sky is Falling,” where your points were pretty much out there, no sugar coating: we made promises regarding 9/11 and broke them, and we as a people don’t really care what goes on in other countries as long as it isn’t happening here. It’s a massive ratio, like 2/24 songs representing that form of lyrical writing, but most I’ve talked to agreed it’s probably your most forward songs yet. Now with hearing “All the World is Mad” and “The Weight,” both fairly blunt songs as to putting what you’re thinking right out there for people to hear, I wonder if you’re shifting how you write lyrics onto a new path? I mean, I don’t have to tell you that myself and everyone else on this board completely love those songs. So it’s not a matter of liking or disliking, just wondering if you’re heading in a new direction with your writing, and taking on a new form of delivery with the majority of your songs. It’s really no different than a poet writing his poetry in a new way, or a novelist switching from a first-person to third-person perspective. Just seeing that, as of now, 2/2 of the new songs are in that manner, I wonder if there’s more of that to come, than your previous material.

On that note, I could be completely overthinking it, and the rest of the album could be in the same vein as your other work, with the imagery and references to other people/work that conveys the message for you.

Sorry, I know that’s kind of weird. I’m just a writer too, so I always wonder what others reasons are to write a certain way.

Anyways, the new songs are, of course, amazing and I’m insanely looking forward to Beggars. Some new video would be awesome, and please…come back to Richmond, yeah? :) I know the crowd kind of sucked and didn’t appreciate your Alchemy Index songs enough, but there were quite a few of us there who were compeltely captivated by the concert.

    Cheers!

  27. Vince says:

DTaWWA should be a fan favorite. It’s insanely awesome and one of the best on AitA. I tend to wish they’d play The Abolition of Man, too. The ending line is really powerful and relevant: The abolition of man is within the reach of science, but are we so far gone that we’ll try it?

  28. Jeff says:

Hoods On Peregrine is the coolest off taita I think. I’m stoked I got to see it twice live cuz it’s never played anymore, a mistake IMO.

  29. Karen says:

    @Vince

I was at the Richmond show too! I was also completely captivated by the concert. I dragged some people along with me (that weren’t initially big Thrice fans) and they not only became huge fans, but they were blown away said it was the best concert they have ever been to. The National is an awesome venue; I agree, they should definitely come back =)

As for the lyrics, I love the old and I love the new!

  30. Sean E says:

    @Tom

well the last chance I had was when they came to London last August, but considering A) it was on my brother’s birthday and B) my dad wasn’t willing to drive me all the way to London for a 2 hour gig, it just wasn’t meant to be.

BTW i love everyone’s saying “this song should be in here” and they’re pretty much all unique answers. Goes to show how great Thrice’s catalogue is

  31. benji's says:

Ive seen thrice 12 times and Dustin twice… Thats why southern california is the best

  32. Roger says:

My only Thrice show was in Münster. I drive 8 hours with my car to be there. It was a perfekt gig. Its 690 km away.

  33. Melissa? says:

i’m at Warped Tour right now.. can’t wait for Thrice! not sure if i’ll surivie the set – the heat here is intense!
    good luck on stage, guys!

  34. Stuzal says:

I just have to say, I just started listening to you guys about a year ago. The first thing I was told to listen to was the alchemy index. It is probably the most amazing thing I have ever heard. I hope your new album is somewhere between there, and vhiessu( I hope I spelled that right). The water album strikes up memories in a way I can not explain(Not the lyrics….. my dad wasn’t a whaler or anything like that.). It was a great idea to do a concept album is such a way, I would hope that you guys would plan to do something similar in the future!*)

If you do have time to write back about this, if you could tell me what Lost Continent was about, that would be amazing. I have my own ideas about it, but I’d love to know for sure.

    Thanx!

  35. Stefan says:

Is anyone on here from Indiana?

  36. Vince says:

    Stuzal,

Lost Continent is a reference to Atlantis, the mythological continent that vanished into the ocean. Lost Continent is essentially a warning to mankind that unless we consider the consequences of our actions and what path we are on, we too may be “swallowed by the sea”…or by consequences only we can take the blame for.

At least, that was my interperetation. Hope it helps!

  37. Eric says:

    @Stefan

Fishers/Bloomington, IN here. Not too many of us around, I see.

I’m really disappointed that you guys won’t be playing here in Indianapolis for Warped next week. I don’t feel like paying ~$40 just to see Alexisonfire! It always seems as though we get the shaft with good bands around here, with rare gems like Portugal. The Man and Grizzly Bear every so often.

Thrice, if you ever get the urge to mix it up and play some new places, Indy’s not a bad choice. It’s very hard to drive to places like Chicago, Columbus or Detroit to see a show sometimes!

  38. Roger says:

Hi, do anyone know City of Ships?

  39. admin says:

@Vince. It’s definitely about how all humans are guilty. Sorry if I accidentally communicated anything to the contrary. Why would we need grace otherwise :)
@Stuzal Vince is pretty right on with his explanation.
@Vince It is fairly easy to write an obscure song. It’s much harder to write a song that communicates clearly but still in a poetic way. It leaves you more exposed, and demands much more of you in terms of how you tell your story or get you point across. This is not to say that I don’t like more obscure songs (I do at times, and I know people like the songs I have written that way) but sometimes I do feel like it’s a cop out, or that I’m wasting time in a sense. That all being said, my starting point with lyrics for the past couple years is to try and find the right subject and style for the particular song. Hope that helps.

@Everyone. We are fine to play a bunch of those songs mentioned, and we’ll try to throw some back in the mix this fall (along with new ones) but you better rock out when it happens :)

    DK

  40. Melissa? says:

don’t worry Dustin, there will be plenty of rocking out to both old and new songs :D

  41. Ryan S says:

    Dustin-

you put a huge smile on my face with that last line!!!! I guarantee I will be rocking out to EVERY song (and singing along) on your fall tour.

    Thank you.

  42. scott says:

@benji and apparently everyone else on here
Agree to disagree. But I do have a fantastic solution this our problem. If thrice would just follow in the footsteps of coheed and cambria and just play an album a night for like a week and then release it all on dvd/cd. Monday night would start with identity crisis. Then tuesday would be IOS and so on and so forth. Of course you’d have to break up the alchemy index into two nights probably. Then do one night of all the b-sides. So like an 8 disc box set of thrice playing every single song they have live. I can’t imagine anything better.

  43. Karen says:

“We are fine to play a bunch of those songs mentioned, and we’ll try to throw some back in the mix this fall (along with new ones) but you better rock out when it happens”

FALL =D Going to at least two of the concerts! I’m right in between Richmond and Baltimore so hopefully you guys keep those cities in mind =D

  44. Brian says:

You guys did great in AZ. I know it’s hella hot, but that’s how we do. Haha. Thanks for coming, guys!

  45. Brian says:

Thanks for the link, Sean E, that’s the best version of The Weight that I’ve heard so far. Really nice to hear Teps throw down a bluesy line over that dirty hook.

  46. Alex says:

Minus The Bear’s “Pachuca Sunrise” is easily the best summer song I can think of. It’s my #1 most played song on itunes. I can’t say enough good things about that band. ‘Beggars’ and the new MTB album, I expect them both to be monsters.

  47. Meg says:

Check out our post for songs you want to hear the most on the next tour! You never know who might be watching!

    http://www.thelostcontinent.org/next-tour-this-fall-maybe-t571.html

  48. Josh T says:

Dustin, sorry for jumping in late on an old post. I’m a little behind on this new site. I’m still trying to find where to sign into my Thrice Alliance account :) I just wanted to thank you for continuing to take the time to answer questions and talk with your fans. Especially with how busy you guys must be right now. And I didn’t think my man-crush could get any more intense. Haha juuust kidding…kinda :P

I totally get what you said about a song with more straightforward lyrics being more difficult to write than a more obscure one. It’s interesting to know and might help some people who might not totally “get” some of the more “simple” songs you’ve written lyrically. From what I can tell I would guess that The Weight would fall more into the difficult category than All the World is Mad. It may be difficult, but I think you do such an amazing job of saying so much with so few words. And the last 4 lines of All The World Is Mad are just mind blowing.

I’ll definitely be sure to catch the upcoming tour, and my first song choice would be Atlantic, and I’d also love to hear Stand and Feel Your Worth, Like Moths to Flame, and/or Hold Fast Hope. Atlantic is such a beautiful song and it has such a special meaning to me. I would love for you to elaborate on it further or share what it really means to you, or maybe others could share what they take from the song. To me, it’s about true love. It’s about always feeling connected to that love, always knowing and feeling that it must be out there somewhere, so you wait for it for what seems like an eternity, though you’ve never actually seen it and you’ve never yet experienced anything quite like it. You see it only in your dreams. And then one day, you’re in another one of those blissful dreams you’re so used to, when you realize this one feels different. It looks just like the same dream come true you’ve had so many times before. But why haven’t you awoken to your same old unfulfilled reality yet? Then you realizethe most amazing thing, that this can’t be another dream, becauce this time, your eyes are open.

It’s such an incredible song. I’m lucky enough to have experienced this same story in finally meeting the love of my life. This song instantly became “our song” as soon as I played it for her. We’re going to get married in the near future and it’s already decided that this will be our wedding song. I might have to surprise her and try to sing it. Or you guys could just be our wedding band :D I hear Adam Sandler is busy that day or something lol. Sounds like a good contest idea to me. Count me in.
