We enjoyed a day off yesterday in the wonderful city of New Orleans. The place just wreaks of history, and holds a special place in my heart as the birthplace of jazz music. A city with a rich musical and culinary history…two things I like to think myself a connoisseur of (but am only competent in one). I got to top the night off with a late night coffee and beignet from Cafe Du Monde. Yum.
We got to spend today in another city with a rich musical history — Memphis, which was a spawning grounds for the blues and rock and roll (as well as the civil rights movement). Pretty cool. It went fine considering we hadn’t played a lot of the songs in forever. Big thanks for those of you that spent your evening with us.

i happened to lose my credit card on thrusday..and the new one still hasnt come in yet!!! Right when the pre-orders come out!! gah!!!
Haha, my first (and only) time meeting Dustin was horribly awkward. I tried to be cordial and friendly, and not awkward, but I probably failed at the not awkward part since he’s someone I look up to, and I was nervous/excited. Actually, I think it’s inevitable that when you meet someone as a fan it makes things a bit weird for both parties, since you’re not approaching the meeting on an even plane.
Anyway I wanted to tell him how much the band meant to me (something I’m sure he’s never heard before), that I’ve been listening to them since Identity Crisis, that I really enjoyed Beggars, and love the band they’ve become, and that I hope they keep making music as Thrice run-on sentence.
He seemed pretty disinterested in what I was saying (maybe he couldn’t hear me clearly?) and actually looked kind of annoyed, so my voice trailed off after the Identity Crisis part and I just let him finish signing my poster in peace. Haha, I think I just hung my head in shame and drove home after that.
I’m sure it was probably just an off day. Although, even if it wasn’t, I don’t care at all, and I still really like Dustin. I have a lot of respect and admiration for him, and I can tell from his lyrics, interviews, and general demeanor that he’s a genuinely good guy overall. Meeting fans seems like an awkward thing anyway, especially since they’re all introverts.
On the flip side, Teppei and Eddie were really friendly. Especially Eddie, who is quite possibly one of the nicest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. Just a genuine and sincere guy. More or less compensated for the extreme awkwardness of meeting Dustin. I saw Riley too, but I didn’t want to bother him.
Hopefully I’ll get to meet Dustin again on this tour somehow and redeem the first meeting. I still have some questions I’d like to ask him. =)
@Karen & Vince
Woah, I was totally out there standing next to you guys, I was by myself because my friends left. That’s awesome. Wish I had gotten a pic with Dustin. Are any of you going to the Norfolk show?
Aww man, I didn’t want my comment to be on a new page.
I hope Dustin doesn’t read it..
@KB
haha that’s so weird! I wish I could go to the Norfolk show but I wont be able to make it =(
Heres a story to make all you guys jealous… sorry its long…
I was taking a philosophy class and i had some assignment to ask 10 people about ethics morals and religion. So i sent it to dustin on myspace and within a day he answered. So i said thanks got all gay and told him he was a hero and its awesome that he would reply… and he said “he said im just a guy man”… and i was like wow this guys down to earth. So he told me to read a book called “the great divide” and “the screwtape letters” and “a case for christ” so i read them all and we talked via myspace for like a month. Then i went to go see him around that time for a solo show in san diego. After the show i walked up to him and said “Im the guy you’ve been talking about religion and stuff on myspace” he kinda smiled and laughed and said “Oh, your ben?” i was like whaaaaaat?!??!!?!?!? yeah man, so we talked for like 5 minutes and he signed my lil print out ticket Hold Fast Hope Ben.
I couldve died right there and been completely content with my life.

who’s that singing back ups on Red Telephone? Doesn’t exactly sound like Dustin, Ed perhaps..?
I want to cover the weight on guitar, but I’m having trouble in finding what effects Teppei and Dustin use for the guitar. Most of the song has some reverb, but the chorus sounds more complicated then just a little reverb..I’m not great with tone/effects though. I can play the song but it just doesn’t sound ready to record…
Infact, does anyone know any specs for how they get their tone? Any pedals they use ?
@benji
Just read over that, made me smile. I really wish I can meet the band now. I just don’t know what I would talk about.
I talked to Teppei a little bit over email, when he was selling some equipment, and I then proceeded to show a bunch of my friends that I had just talked to Teppei from Thrice. Wasn’t anything big, but it made my day.
@Tyler… Still its huge for guys like us… Guys my hero, so i was pretty awe struck
I remember when I met Thrice in 06 at Taste of Chaos. I was talking like a little school girl with a crush and was telling them how I had everything from IC to Vheissu (it was 06 remember) and that I loved it all. And I just remember Ed looking me all surprised and going “ReeeaaaalllllyyyyY????” like it was some sort of shock to them hahaha.
Then at warped this summer me and my buddy just told them how we drove 32 hours to see them and they found that amusing. Got a snap with them and got so incredibly sunburt and got the worst heat stroke. Totally worth it haha.
@Benji
Sounds awesome. But do you mean “The Great Divorce” by any chance? It’s my favorite by Lewis.
@Jim…. my bad dude… it is the great divorce… i feel like a douche for screwing that up
Wow, u know this is why they keep this blog open and put so much into it, i love reading about ya’lls encounters with thrice and i just keep dreaming what i would do if i ever met them. I can only imagine what the thrice guys get out of this haha
yea im pretty damn jealous.
Yeah, I asked Dustin how he learned to sing during the signing after the secret show… he was kinda explaining that unless you’re singing characters like Tom Waits it’s all about becoming comfortable with your own voice, and then I said something stupid trying to elaborate on that, and he gave me this look like, ‘What’re you saying?’ And I felt like such a geek, hahaha.
But yeah, I basically wanted to be all their best friend after just that little meet ‘n greet. They’re awesome people.
@Danny O’Brien
Me too! i’ll be in san fran. i was there when they came in 08 to the fillmore. I’m renting a room and everything. Should be amazing!
@Simon
It is Sir Teps
oh really? thats heaps cool – it has so much, pardon my French, balls, and Teppei has such an awesome clean voice, and usually Ed does the throatyness.. well then =]
Teppei sounds so awesome on that song. I love it.
@ the ONLY forum monitor – that’s an awesome story man, really really cool, Im so pleased for you. I could no way carry a conversation with DK about the things i’d like, just not informed enough and he’d get tired of it pretty quick i’m sure! I was in the first couple of people to email teps about the gear sale though so got a couple of emails back which was nice.
@ben
thats a pretty sweet story man.
HEYY!
I emailed Shockhound.com to find out when the Thrice Shockhound Live Sessions will be posted and I got the response this morning
—”Hey Bryson!
Thanks for emailing ShockHound!
I don’t know the exact date that it will be posted but we totally will have
it up soon Bryson. “—–
pretty cool stuff, sooooo yaaaaaaa haha
Sweet man! let us know when theyre up yah?
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who slightly acted like a fool. With Dustin I said “You don’t even compare to anyone else” when I meant to say “No one even compares to you.” And with Teppei I couldn’t think of anything to say so I was like “Uh… yeah can I have a picture with you because this is kinda huge for me” haha
I think it’s great that they’re all so modest and don’t understand why we get so excited to meet them but I’d like to see Dustin go back in time and meet C.S. Lewis and not get tongue tied =P
I wanna see that damn Shockhound thing!
Haha yeah… I told Dustin at the end of our discussion, “Well, it sounds great, don’t change a thing.” I still kick myself over that, it sounds so stupid.
And yeah, when’s Shockhound gonna get off their asses already?
Haha, when I met thrice last year, everyone was like stunned after the show, I walked up to Dustin and asked him to take a pic of me and my friends. Later a few people stood around dustin, I walked up and said “dustin, can you give me a hug?” everyone around me looked like “:O” lol i always try to imagine being dustin in that moment when a 6ft guy walked to him and asked for a hug. As I walked away i was so stunned i couldn’t think of a question!
6,2 i mean, sry for double post
Soo Norfolk is under water…I hope you guys can still play here tomorrow…..
dang i am going to that norfolk show. i am going to break down and cry if i make the drive to norfolk only to have it cancelled
Norfolk is flooded?
I’m coming to the show from Fairfax by myself in a Toyota Celica…I wonder how bad it is and if my car will make it.
When i met them all at the shockhound “secret show” i was pretty tongue tied… it was just after that amazing performance and they were signing posters for everyone and i couldnt think of anyhting to say except “thank you that was awesome” to all of them haha… at least i kept a firm handshake… what a dork
i hope that show goes up soon… see you guys on the 24/25
haha yeah my buddy and i were going to drive down to norfolk from long island tomorrow morning. now that norfolk is under water, we decided to call it off. i’m pretty bummed. oh well, life goes on. thrice, hope you boys have fun tomorrow night, hopefully i’ll see you up here in a couple weeks!
I already bought the tickets. My friend bailed at the last moment. Now I’m wondering if I should go or not.
They neeed to postpone the show or give us refunds if Norfolk is flooded.
