We have been bested by mother nature and have been absolutely trapped in our hotel rooms all day. I can see from our hotel room window that the roads all around us are flooded. Nine stories up, I feel like I’m on a boat every time the wind blows hard, and our drum tech Kenna and I were both freaking out as we watched the open closet door rock back and forth a bit from the building moving. Pretty insane. I hope the storm lets up at least a little bit tomorrow. Oh, we’re in Norfolk, VA by the way.
We’ve had a pretty fun few days hanging out with some old friends in the Richmond, Baltimore, DC area. Ed and I got to have some solid hang time with our old buddy Jason Hamacher (Frodus) and Brian McTernan (produced/engineered Illusion and Artist). We hadn’t even seen Brian’s studio since he relocated to Baltimore. It’s nice…really nice. There’s only a couple more shows with Brand New which is kind of a bummer. It’s been great hanging with them and their crew again. Good people all around.

Here’s some images from the last week or so:

really enjoyed the show, was hoping that the set would be longer, but wasn’t disappointed. loved the reworking of milly michaelson. God bless.
To be honest, I didn’t discern much difference from the two versions of AITA (I looked it up just because of this conversation). But I think a lot of songs — like Silhouette or Cold Cash and Colder Hearts — would have sounded completely different with the different mixing, and better.
honestly can’t imagine Silhouette sounding better. and CCCH not so easy either. how would you describe the difference?
As much as I really like the alternate, and generally superior version of TAITA, I don’t like the minor lyrical changes Dustin made at all. I think the original lyrics flow better and are more affecting.
But I would love it if Thrice re-released that album someday with proper mixing, the way they wanted it to sound. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I used to love that album back in the day, but other than “Don’t Tell,” I just can’t get into it at all anymore.
Speaking of things that should have been, but never were, I demand to see the rest of this show:

Man that video never gets old. That video is everything the “Live at the House of Blues” dvd should have been, but wasn’t. Almost everything about it is phenomenal. I’m guessing they just didn’t have the budget to do something so special for their live dvd, but I wonder if any other songs were recorded so professionally and beautifully from that show.
@ heart
I think you would looooove the new album, give it a couple good listens.
i personally think it is some of their best work, but id like to hear what you think
^ I have never liked Say Anything, but I must say that I love Cemetery, especially the album version. =)
I never really thought he deserved to be with Sherri, but that song almost made me have a change of heart. There’s no denying that it’s a great, heartfelt love song.
I like the House of Blues DVD, even if the mixing is a little murky. My biggest beef with it is how little Teppei there is. The photographers did such a good job mixing it up between Ed, Riley, and Dustin, but you almost never see ol Teps. Heartbreaking because I always want to see what he’s doing on guitar.
where can you hear the different mixes? can’t find them…
yeah, about these alternate mixes, where are these alternatives? im confused, and also im not in on the technical aspect of recording but what is the difference between mixing and engineering? just wondering.
@NK~i think that video was their video for that song like a single, but i could be wrong. seems too professional to be just a recording from a random show.
before vheissu came out a blog posted the alternate mix of taita (the song), i dunno if it’s illegal to put the link on here, but here you go:

Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s recorded for the Earth Will Shake alone.
It is a really really bad ass live video. I can’t ever forget the part when Ed’s just rocking to the groove (and the groove is implied! the chain gang part).
I really don’t understand what is so “wrong” with TAITA’s production. Clean, agressive, straightforward. Crystal clear drums, which I just love to hear, and have never before or since sounded as much as the backbone of the songs as on TAITA (IMO).
I now have 4 different versions of TAITA in my itunes lol
who would kill for this set list as well? :
Of Dust and Nations
At The Last
The Whaler
A Song For Milly Michaelson
Trust
Helter Skelter
The Weight
All The World Is Mad
Like Moths To Flame
The Melting Point of Wax
The Arsonist
Come All You Weary
Stare At The Sun
Circles
encore:
The Earth Will Shake
Beggars
^a little far fetched, I’m quite aware; but I’d kill to see it. haha
i would not beg for that set list….
@NK
I was at that show. Brixton Academy in London.
That video is just perfect.
I remember thinking how sad it was that so little people got into Thrice yet the whole place went mental for Coheed and Cambria. Ergh.
Any UK tour planned soon? =(
Kenna? As in New Sacred Cow and Make Sure They See My Face Kenna? Wow, didn’t know he was the drum tech.
I really should keep up with this stuff more, as much as I love your guys’ music. NK, that live was incredible. I’ve heard all about the flooding and stuff in Norfolk (My family lives in Va Beach, and so do I during the summers). But that’s what you get when you build a couple cities on a huge freaking swamp. I’m kinda pissed that I haven’t been able to see you guys live for like three years or something like that; makes me wish I’d been there, torrential flooding and all.
I just moved from Norfolk, Va shortly before the storm. I know how it gets over there and from what I heard this last one was worse than any of the ones I saw though.
@Ben! Id say at least a good half that was played at the show I saw. I die completely happy if I saw Come all you weary
