NEW YEAR, NEW STUFF

January 4th, 2010

Hey folks.  Hope you all had a happy, healthy, and safe holiday.

New year! New stuff!

First, our Daytrotter Session that we did during our short tour with The Dear Hunter and Polar Bear Club has been posted here. We had a great great time doing it (basically walking into a room with a ton of random instruments in various states of well-being, picking a few songs, and jamming/recording straight to a two-track tape machine) and want to thank the good people at Daytrotter for allowing us the opportunity to do such a thing. It was such a cool experience. I’ve been a fan of the site (and the concept) for quite a while, so to get in there, see how it all works, and have some fun playing some songs was a treat.

Second, we’ll be guest editing at Magnet Magazine this week. You can check out the first part of that experience (in the form of a Q&A) with Dustin, here. We each had the opportunity to write four short pieces on whatever we wanted to (Ooh, an excuse to type with a purpose!) that will be posted as the week progresses. I’m a huge fan of having an outlet for my very own textual diarrhea, so being able to do this, especially with a magazine of Magnet’s ilk, was a lot of fun.

And that’s what’s up for now. More coming soon…

-Riley

Arrrggghhhh I can’t believe I’m going to be seeing Thrice two consecutive nights, Nottingham and Wembley.

    FUCK!

  2. Tom says:

what a great start to the year huh Nick?! :)

  3. Nick C says:

    Hah, best start ever :)

  4. Nick C says:

We Are The Ocean are the UK Tour support.

Good luck to them. They are from my town and I went to school with the frontman. I know the frontman adores Thrice at least!

  5. reeno says:

I really dig the stripped down version of circles on Daytrotter, it feels like there is so much more emotion in «we set sail…brail and candlelight» because the voices sounds way more organic than on the album it’s like if they’d be playing in my living room.

  6. hugo says:

Hey Riley, since I don’t think I can comment on your blog,

just to let you know that in the comments section on the link you posted to DFW’s speech someone (the 1st comment) saved it, via cache or whatever.

A great read. The last time you posted it I must’ve read it diagonally ’cause it seemed brand new to me this time around.

  7. Jeff says:

Hope you come to Canada soon….

  8. Josh says:

I second Jeff’s sentiment! I’ll be seeing Wilco next month, and the only thing that could make my 2010 better would be seeing Thrice too.

The Daytrotter session is knocking my socks off. Loving the Tom Waits cover!

  9. Dave the Pirate! says:

Glad to hear that things are going well for you guys :)

Hope all is well on your Euro Tour and Best wishes for a safe return home.

  10. sam. says:

    hey guys,
the magnet magazine articles are pretty neat.

    thanks.

  11. Ryan says:

What sam said, its cool to learn more about you guys, your interests and what not. I look forward to checking out Talk Talk, the video dustin posted was damn good.

  12. Scott says:

“Where’s the band?” tonight!!! I can’t wait to see DK!! Wooo!

  13. Vince says:

Someone sold their sealed Vheissu vinyl for 175$.

Tempted, but I love you guys too much to sell mine.

  14. Alex says:

incredible music.. you’re magicians. hello from spain

  15. Scott says:

I think i bought my vheissu vinyl on ebay for like $20 2 years ago. Crazy how that crap appreciates.

  16. Bryson says:

    go cardinals!!!!! haha

  17. Justin says:

does anyone know if an mp3 of the band version of “A song for Milly” turned up? I don’t really care how great the quality is, i just want to listen to that version haha.

Much appreciated if anyone gets back to me.

  18. Tom says:

@bryson, disappointed with last night’s game, Rodgers finished the game as he started it with cheap turnovers costing us the game :(
I’m now backing the cowboys, hoping Favre gets slaughtered next weekend.

  19. Mattysesh says:

$175? Wow! That would be a quick cash grab considering i just got mine for $25 from merch. But I would feel like I am selling my soul haha. My Thrice vinyls are pretty much my most prized possesions :P

  20. Mike C says:

I dropped $150 on “The Teppei” thrice shoes… It’s the most I’ve ever spent on a clothing article. They look cool and all… but they’re sooo uncomfortable. The soles are too narrow (I have average sized feet). I wore them anyway hoping they would break in. By the end of the night I could barely walk b/c of the blisters that had formed on my Achilles heel (never mind the pain in the soles of my feet). When the blisters heal I’m going to try again to break in the shoes. I’m not sure which is worse, the physical pain of wearing “The Teppei” or the pain of paying $150 for something that may end up being un-wearable… :( Oh well, I still love Thrice & am so grateful for the music they create. Cheers to everyone & I hope you laugh @ my silly misfortune :)

  21. A different Kyle says:

    Mike C –
Dude, it shouldn’t be a pain that they’re unwearable. Scroll the comments – What were once $20 Vheissu LPs are now apparently selling for 5x that amount. You spend $150 on shoes, they should either be Dorothy’s Ruby Reds or be kept in a box and cherished for the rest of your life . . . or until you donate them to a charity auction where they sell for eleventy thousand dollars.

  22. Ryan Vernon says:

Hello members of Thrice (if you all indeed read these posts) forgive my skepticism! I have been a fan of your music since the Identity Crisis days. I’ve never had the privilege of listening to First Impressions, but I’m quite sure it was enjoyable. With all honesty, me loving heavy music in general always wanted to see you all get heavier. After the TAITA era I expected the following album to pick up and go forth. I was “let down” by the Alchemy Index. Note my quotes! I spoke way too soon. And me.. I have always preached eclecticism to my peers, never gave it the needed attention. I recently purchased your House Of Blues CD/DVD. I sat in my chair and listened intently..and inevitably blown away. I was shown some of the new material along with a healthy mix of the past. Brimming with nostalgia and happiness I thought to myself how could I have been so quick to judge this group whom I’ve followed for so many years! Thrice, keep this up. You all will always have a place in my mind and heart. Take care gentlemen.

  23. Perri. says:

I saw We Are The Ocean supporting The Used in September, They seemed alright. Alot of people were singing along…I won’t mind seeing them again =]

I can’t believe I’l be seeing them in a week. ONE WEEK!

It is just mad, I can’t wait!

    xxx

  24. LikeLinus says:

    got my vinyl yesterday.
    I got red colour, number 0226/2000 :P

  25. Vince says:

I guess something happened to the most recent post, but…my thoughts are with you Teppei, as I’m sure many others are also keeping you in their thoughts. I hope you and your family take care and stay well…

  26. Scott says:

Is anyone else pulling for a recorded live version of A song for Milly Michaelson? I don’t think there is something I would love more than to have that live version available at the touch of my thumb, with good quality. So epic. Please give it to us thrice!

  27. r1vers says:

Agreed re: Milly. A professional recording of that would be awesome.

  28. Tom says:

what was the latest post? and what is going on? hope all is okay with teppei if it’s a recurrence of what ever happended that made him not play dates in the US… presume we might not be seeing you next week in the UK now..

  29. Tom says:

i didn’t mean that in a selfish way – i meant if it’s serious enough for you to need to be home, then that’s where you need to be and we’ll just wait til you can all come over..

  30. Kevin G. says:

I almost thought that i dreamed this awful news about teps…

i’m SO sorry for your loss and for your family

    R.I.P

    but….

I know one day, all your scars will disappear
    Like the stars at dawn…
And all of your pain, will fade away when morning comes
and on that day when you look backwards you will see, that everything is changed
and all of your trials, will be as milestones on the way

and as long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart….

I actually feel depressed, even though i never saw you in person, i never saw thrice live (but God knos i tried, but you guys never come to Europe!).

    I’m so very sorry.

All my thoughts are with you and your kids.

    God bless you.

    Kev

  31. Tom says:

@kev/anyone – what was in the post, what has happened?

  32. LikeLinus says:

it says that Teppei´s mom died in cancer on the holidays.
She went sick when he needed to go home from the fall tour.
So now when his children have lost their grandma, he will spend time with them and his family. His mom was the most importent person for them all. So all my thoughts goes to Teppei and his family. All fans will understand!
And now Nate from The Dear Hunter will take Teppei´s place on the upcoming tour, but Teppei will be back after the UK.

  33. Roger says:

I think tepp delete the last post because he only want to give this information the daily board user´s(fanbase). Thanks for sharing with us Teppei.

    Greetz from Germany

  34. Tom says:

@LikeLinus thank you very much for updating, I was on the site yesterday morning UK time and this morning so can’t have been up very long. I’m saddened to hear that news and as i said before it’s right that he be with his family right now.

Thoughts with you and we look forward to seeing you some time soon teppei.

  35. Tom says:

and @roger not sure what point you’re making there but will give you the benefit of the doubt that it’s been lost in translation.

  36. Jonathan says:

I saw the post up yesterday and was wondering where it was today asd well. I was saddened by this new. My thoughts are with Teppei and his family. I knew thrice back in the first impressions day in Orange County and they are amazing people i cant wait to see where they go in the future. God Bless you and your family Teppei
