A note from me (Teppei)…

January 13th, 2010

Hey people,
I regretfully won’t be able to make it to the UK with the rest of the band for this upcoming run. As most of you who keep up with us know, I had to fly home for a few days during our last headline run due to a “family emergency”. I guess I never actually explained what was going on…my mom was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in September and her condition took a turn for the worse during the tail end of that tour. Since then, her condition continued to decline and she had been living in our house with my wife and two kids, receiving hospice care for the last month or so. She finally passed away several days ago which is why I won’t be able to leave for the tour. There’s a whole lot of things involved in wrapping up a person’s life, not to mention I really need to be here for my family, especially my kids, who lost their beloved “baba”.

It has been an absolutely insane couple months for my family and I, but I’m glad that we were able to be there 100% for my mother and that she was able to leave this world surrounded by security and love. She was the single most important person of my life and played an integral role in my kids’ lives as well. It’s incredibly unfortunate that our time with her in this life has been cut short, but I know that she is in a much better place now and I take great comfort in that.

Thank you all very much for showing your love and support when I had to step out of the tour a couple months ago. I showed my mom all the prayers and well wishes left on the comments and it actually made her well up. I’ll be back with the guys after this tour. Oh, and our good friend Nate from The Dear Hunter will be stepping in (again) for me, this time for the whole set. A HUGE thanks to him for stepping up to the plate again. What a guy! Thanks again everyone, and I’ll see you all again soon.

I love you mom.

Leeds cockpit UK setlist (as written..you can guess whose I’m sure…)

    Dust. 174
    Silhouette
    All the world 137
    Weight 183
    Helter 170
    All that’s left 188
    Hold fast 196
    Artist
    In Exile 96
    Milly 122
    At the last 137
    Deadbeat
    Wax
    Earth 127

(the encore was dustin solo stare at the sun after giving the crowd the choice of that or come all you weary and then beggars)
Few observations- just back from the 3 hour drive home:

Great show, well worth the 17 months since the last appearance.
The setlist, for the three of us anyway, and from
the crowd around me at the front, was BANG ON the money boys. People
were saying “thank you” after songs were starting..
One person shouted for deadbolt after the third song, bit it was Tongue in cheek, like a couple of ultra blue and all eyes requests. Dustin visibly winced before starting encore closer besshars when awake and avenge the dead was requested, but Ed was humble in the introduction of it sayin it was for the people who had been with them for 10 years, and Nate couldn’t hide his smile at how nuts everyone went for it when it kicked in. I KNOW it’s old to them (hence it being called “deadbeat” on the setlists etc. but uk/overseas fans get to see them once every 12-18 months on average and a nigh on full cockpit paying £15 a head deserve that kind of nod from the band that “hey we’ll litter the set with old favourites and rework an oldie” (the new milly michaelson is immense guys, whoever’s idea that was take a bow..)
Nate did an excellent job, impossible shoes to fill and with his (or teppei’s?) tele cutting out at the climax of beggars he can be proud and I was glad I got to tell him so and shake his hand afterwards.
Finally, you were missed tonight teppei, fantastic news that you’ll be back
with the boys in the summer.

ONLY slight tiny downside- deadbolt being written deadbeat, just feels like riley thinks I’m dumb for wanting to hear that song and celebrate why I got into them all those years ago.. Still Im really chuffed I finally managed to get one as always been unlucky on the scramble the last five times!

I hope all goes well for your dates through the week and I’ll see you guys on
    saturday at wembley!!!

Thanks for loaning us all your prize asset america, givin us more amazing nights to rememer like this one..

Hey man, I am incredibly sorry for your loss. I recently lost my mother as well in a very sudden manner. She left behind my brother (17) and I (21) and a whole load of financial obligations and responsibilities. At times such as this, it is important to focus on the love and support from family and friends and just remember all of the good, cherish every memory. Be thankful for music, it has been the biggest outlet for me in dealing with all of this. Just continue to make incredible music and leave behind a legacy of which you know she would be proud.

Tons of love man, you guys are my heroes, just be strong,
    -Chris from Pittsburgh

    teppei-

as someone who has been where you are right now, let me just say that ‘it’ will never get any ‘easier’, or ‘better’. however, you can always take solace in the fact that your mother is in the best place she has ever been right now. she is infinitely wiser than anyone who has ever walked the face of this earth. she has now found all of the answers that all of us have been seeking, and will continue to chase, throughout our lives. she will always be with you.

i am so proud of you.

    all of my love,

    -SD
