Again we go forth!

May 24th, 2010

Hey everyone. First, thanks for all the support and kindness and grace that everyone has shown to us and my family in light of the last tour being cancelled.

Secondly, we are really excited to get back out on the road next week and we are hoping to see you all there. We are pulling out some songs we haven’t played in a while (even a couple shredders) and are practicing this week. Also, the set should be changing a fair amount, possibly half the set changing from one night to the next. We’ll see how that goes, but that’s how we are practicing.

Lastly, don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched the last episode of Lost.

Dude. Really? Worst ending of a show ever. It was like watching a 2 year try to dazzle you with a sleight-of-hand trick.

Love you all – see you very soon.
Dustin

Well I remember the band saying that even…

  2. Joe says:

I agree with you Ian, T & C and Phoenix are great songs. They are just way different than what thrice has done in awhile, but there is nothing wrong with that. I too hope they play some songs from Identity Crisis; mostly T & C.

  3. Ian says:

i’m glad you agree with me joe. as a whole identity crisis isn’t the best album and it was sorta a starting point for them. but you can’t look at how they have progressed as a band and not take for account the sound they had in 2002. not the biggest fan of the album but i do love identity crisis, phoenix ignition ultra blue and t and c alot and still do listen to them on occasion. now this is my opinion feel free to agree or disagree.

Josh in Saskatoon – It was incomplete because of its complete and utter failure to explain how it all started. They sent us down the rabbit hole only to finally show us nothing but an old crazy woman who for some reason was given the power to create rules, yet ended up on the island after her mother birthed her, and so on apparently into infinity. Was that the only point? The island is some sort of decedent of Eden that’s existed for eternity? But if there was no MiB before then, what’s the point in that?

I/we really need to find some other hobbies :p

  5. The point of that story was to illustrate the cyclical nature of things. There’s Egyptian imagery on the island because just like the DI, the Losties, and Richard Alpert, people from all over have come to the island at various points in time. In essence the island is a sort of eternity or timestream in which everything else occurs (figuratively; I obviously don’t think the island existed before the planet did). That Mother is only one of a seemingly endless line of protectors that included Hurley and Jacob, and preceded MIB is indicative of the fact that protecting the island has more to do with the island itself than with MIB’s presence on it. He became a mutated version of the corruption that characterized the people before him and after him (including Dharma), who sought to exploit or otherwise harm the island. The story of Mother and the wider mythology is similar to the biblical story of The Tower of Babel in that anyone who got too close to the island’s source of power was destroyed.

It really baffles me that people would rather have second-rate “answers” that could never satisfy than have a story that resonates and still allows for mystery. That’s what ruined Alias for most people, yet it’s what some seem to be demanding of LOST.

This article from a year ago by JJ Abrams, the creator of LOST, sums up my thoughts very nicely.

Thrice also will be @ Highfield

Please also play a headline show in this region, maybe dresden Zwickau or leipzig. Much love an thank you for for playing again in europe.

  7. Seth says:

I thought the ending to LOST was awesome. They answered questions and it made sense

  8. Drew says:

I thought lost was beautiful.. the show wasnt about the question and no matter what they give it couldnt satisfy what people “wanted” it to be. The show was/is always about the characters and their journey. As Mother said in “across the sea” ,”every question I answer will give way to another question”

  9. A different Kyle says:

(Does anyone have a good lost blog we can move to? I don’t want to keep hijacking this thread…)

I did like how they left stuff open. My favorite is Jacob’s attempt to say that he was giving each of them something he never had: a choice. He says this even though he had been watching and grooming them since they were children. IMO the smoke monster was truly evil, but Jacob was only slightly less so.
My problem is that they attempted to answer things with straight up dumb magic we can’t have a philosophical discussion about:. mother shows kids a hole full of light (capped by a literal cork…) that all men strive for but none of them will ever attain or they’ll suffer something worse than death. Gag me.

  10. Michael says:

Can you take your Lost discussion elsewhere, please?

  11. Rob says:

So looking forward to this tour. Can’t wait to see you guys 6/23 in Philly!

  12. A different Kyle says:

Michael – sorry for being annoying :)

Urrbody else (er, lost fans): I just made this if y’all are interested in moving. http://thricelost.boardhost.com/

  13. Michael v says:

You guys gotta play I want you. You probwill but hey I you never know. Great cover too :)

  14. geert says:

    Hi guys from Thrice,

    Noticed you are playing Pukkelpop-festival.
Any idea at what time? Reason is that I’d love to see the show. But I have to work that day and can’t get a day off fue to holiday-season in the office.
If possible would come after work. If it’s worth/possible…

    many thanks
    cheers
    Geert

  15. Tim Philly. says:

First, I wanna say, I really hope things are well with the family affairs all around.

And second…I noticed you’re coming to the Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK this July, so it seems most of my prayers directed towards you guys are coming true…since you’re going to be there (as headliners, no less), I can guarantee you I’ll be there at the front, in full support. I may even bring some friends along who are missing out on all the amazing tunes..THANK YOU VERY MUCH, and I can say without a coubt you’ve pretty much made my whole year good with this. god bless

  16. Tim Philly. says:

ugh. rest assured, I meant “doubt” in the previous message. sorry. lol

  17. Seth says:

Hope you guys come close to Omaha! Us Nebraskan’s really miss you guys here!

  18. rake says:

too bad you aren’t hitting Vancouver, you will be missed, especially considering the revamped setlist.

I’m glad you guys are deciding it’s due time to play some of the older stuff. I think it’s extremely important as a band to recognize your fans, your songs, and appreciate/recognize the stepping stones which helped you progress and prosper as a band, even if the songs feel dated and mainstream.

The fan who knows few Thrice songs who pays good money for a ticket will feel a bit cheated if the one tune he or she knows isn’t played… It’s repetitive as a band but it’s also an act of kindness. For example, Metallica will always play the songs the fans want to here, because they know the fans paid to see a good show and that’s what they do, and they’re one of the msot successful and talented bands in history. I’m not a huge fan, but that’s one thing they’ve got over Thrice and it’s a big one.

  19. rake says:

    Hear*

    curse you alcohol.

  20. I’d put together a dream setlist, but where’s the fun in that. One request, though? Please play Flags of Dawn at the Saskatoon show. I’ve seen you guys here three times and you haven’t played it at any of those shows.

  21. Michael says:

I just got done reading a book on greving called Ordinary People bu Judeth Guest. Great book and if anything else should happen to Dustin’s father or other’s in anyone’s family it might end up helping a WHOLE lot!
Well just thought I should add it. Peace out. Keep on rocking

  22. Alberto A. says:

…the show did start with a plane going down, right?…mmm…
Check out BREAKING BAD on the AMC network, they are deep into season 3 but I highly recommend you get the first two on blu-ray, or DVD…a great Podcast to go with it doesn’t hurt

  23. Josh B says:

Honestly Dustin, I think you shoud give it another watch. Upon first view i was dissapointed as well, also because of all the hype it was kind of a let down. But think about what the show is really trying to say, and watch it again, I think you would appreciate it more the second time.

  24. Jon says:

    Dear Dustin,

Thrice has been my favorite band since you guys came out with Identity crisis and you’re music has meant an incredible amount to me throughout the years. That being said, reading your comment about Lost almost makes me want to not listen to your music ever again. The ending was perfect, and I would figure that someone like you would be able to see that better than anyone. I guess not.
